About 347 Stainless Steel

Type 347 is a stabilized austenitic stainless steel similar to type 304 with an addition of Columbium and Tantalum. The columbium serves to produce a stabilized type of stainless steel which is immune to chromium carbide precipitation. This type of grades are thus recommended for parts fabricated by welding which cannot be susequently annealed or for parts which must operate in service between 800 – 1600°F.

Stainless Steel 347 is similar to the 321 stainless steels in that it is often used as a stabilized alternative to Type 304. In the case of 347, however, the stabilizing agent is columbium. This metal intensifies 347’s already present ability to withstand intergranular corrosion for maximum capabilities. Additionally, the columbium allows for 347 to undergo repeated heating in temperatures up to 1650° F. As a result, the metal is commonly applied to high temperature equipment, such as gaskets and expansion joints, along with rocket engine and chemical manufacturing.

Stainless Steel 347 UNS S34700 is advantageous for high temperature service because of its good mechanical properties . SS 347 also has excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion following exposure to temperatures in the chromium carbide precipitation range from 800° to 1500° F. SS 347 is similar to SS 321 with respect to intergranular corrosion which is achieved through the use of columbium as a stabilizing element to maximize this feature. SS 347 can not be hardened through heat treating, but elevated properties may be obtained through cold reduction. SS 347H is a modification of SS 347 with a higher carbon content, to provide improved high temperature strength.

  • Packing – We can place stainless steel plates as per your requirements. Normally we have stainless steel plates packed on wooden pallets. On special requests from our customers, we can also do custom packing especially for our export customers.
  • Plasma Cutting – Metline has in-house plasma cutting facilities. We can cut the plates to suit your size requirements, through plasma or fire cutting.
  • Water Jet Cutting – For special size stainless steel plates, we can also offer water jet cutting. However, the cost is higher for water jest cutting as compared to plasma cutting.
  • Laser Cutting – Laser cutting is the most expensive, and required for precision engineered parts. Stainless steel plates can be invoiced separately, and we can separately charge for laser cutting, if the customer accepts the same.
  • Custom Machining – We have in-house machining facilities, and can process stainless steel blocks as per your drawings. If you a are looking for precision engineered stainless steel blocks, please do contact us.
  • Various Forms – We can offer flat rolled products in various forms such as Coils, Foils, Rolls, Plain Sheet, Shim Sheet, Perforated Sheet, Chequered Plate, Strip, Flats, Blank (Circle), Ring (Flange) etc.
